About the Holding
Michael’s farm is located a few miles from Nenagh and Newport. They have 55 suckler cows and calves on the farm. They also have a polytunnel for growing some of our own vegs. Michael also keep about 20 hens year-round. During the summer they also rear our own pigs and broiler hens.
The farm is situated in a scenic peaceful area with plenty of tranquil areas around the farm.
A Social Farming Day
- Checking on cows and calves, walking through them making sure all are in good health.
- After that we usually feed the hens, collect eggs, clean out the hen house, and put in fresh bedding for the hens.
- Tidying up around the yard (i.e., painting barriers in sheds for maintenance, cleaning sheds during the winter).
- Cutting weeds under the farm fencing.
- Collecting timber that has fallen around the farm and cutting it up in the farmyard; itself in a safe environment; and stacking.
- Sowing, growing, watering, feeding, and weeding of plants in the polytunnel. During the autumn and winter, the polytunnel needs to be cleared and begin the preparations for the following year.
- During the winter there would be the regular feeding of silage, hay, or meal to the cattle in the yard every day.
- Assisting in making lunch and baking
Local Interests
In their locality, the Silver Mines Mountains and Keeper Hill are within 5k of the house. They are within 10k of Birdhill village which has three nice walking trails and a sensory garden which could play a role in part of the organised day. Michael has a great interest in local GAA and the pitch is here within a couple of hundred meters of the farm.
