
About the Holding
Denis and his wife Eileen run this beef farm buying in weanlings at six to nine months of age and rearing them to the factory stage. They are fed indoors during the winter months and put out on the grass in the spring. The following November they are put back into the slatted house where they are fattened until they are ready for the factory in the following February/March.
A Social Farming Day
- Spring: maintaining fencing and wiring on the farm; cleaning slatted horse area when the cattle go out to grass.
- Summer: moving animals from haddock and dosing at regular intervals.
- Autumn: maintenance work in the slatted house (ie. painting).
- Winter: feeding and bedding cattle, scraping the yard.
Local Interest
Denis is the Secretary of the Community Alert Group in the area and is also a volunteer driver for Cancer Connect that takes patients to Cork hospitals for treatments approx. one day a month. He is also on the Committee of Bantry Care for the Aged, an organisation that provides houses for the elderly, and a Meals on wheels service.
